    When European monks first polished glass reading stones in the 13th century, they could hardly have imagined that this convex lens would trigger an 800-year-long visual revolution. From a simple tool for vision correction to a functional carrier integrating materials science, optical engineering, and digital technology, every technological leap of lenses has profoundly reshaped the way humans interact with the world. Throughout its evolutionary journey, it has always revolved around three core propositions: lighter materials, stronger functions, and more intelligent interactions. This is not merely a technological innovation but also a vivid portrayal of humanity's unceasing pursuit of a better visual experience.

    I. Material Innovation: From Restraint to Liberation

    1. The Heavy Shackles of the Glass Era

    Early glass lenses were nothing short of “visual torture devices.” Hand-polished lenses were over 10mm thick and could weigh up to 100g. The Abbe number, a crucial metric for measuring chromatic dispersion, was only around 30, resulting in severe chromatic aberration issues. Although the molding technology brought about by the Industrial Revolution enabled mass production of lenses, it failed to overcome the physical limitations of the material itself. During World War II, a pilot wearing glass lenses went blind due to lens breakage. This tragic incident directly spurred the material revolution. There was an urgent need for a safer and more lightweight lens material.

    2. The Disruptive Breakthroughs of Resin and PC

    In 1947, the American company PPG developed CR-39 resin lenses. This technology, originally designed for fighter cockpit canopies, brought revolutionary changes to lens materials. Compared with glass lenses, resin lenses saw a 60% reduction in weight and a five-fold increase in impact resistance. The emergence of polycarbonate (PC) lenses represented an even more remarkable cross - border revolution. The PC material developed by NASA for space helmets, with its refractive index of 1.59 and 100% UV resistance, quickly became the top choice for sports goggles and children's glasses. The essence of material iteration lies in transforming lenses from “precision instruments that require meticulous protection” into “daily companions adaptable to extreme scenarios,” significantly expanding the application scope of lenses.
